tropical storm lashes japan - Storm Saola brings heavy rain, gusts to Japan - BBC News
Severe tropical storm Saola continues to move along the Pacific coast of Japan. It is bringing heavy rain and gusty winds to wide areas of eastern and northern Japan.
The storm arrived less than a week after Typhoon Lan hit the country, killing 5 people and leaving one missing.
On Sunday night, Saola was off the coast of Chiba Prefecture, near Tokyo, and was packing winds of up to 110 kilometers an hour near its center.
54 millimeters of rain fell in one hour at Otaki Town.
Mobara City had 36 millimeters of hourly rainfall.
Earlier in Tokushima Prefecture, western Japan, an express train made an emergency stop when it hit a tree that had fallen onto the tracks.
Japan's Meteorological Agency says Saola will continue to move east while gaining speed, and will become a low-pressure system early on Monday morning.
The agency says there is a risk of storm surges, landslides, overflowing rivers and flooding.
Airlines have canceled 86 flights between the main island of Honshu and Kyushu. Flights to Okinawa have also been cancelled.
